The emergency medical services (EMS) coordinator will assist the Division Chief of Health and Safety in coordinating Meridian Fire Department’s EMS program. This position will assist in designing initial and on-going training for all department members as well as facilitate training processes and evaluation procedures for field providers of Meridian Fire Department. This position will organize and schedule required EMS educational courses. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Attends regional committee meetings such as the regional interagency committee on EMS, and medical directorate; Attends ACCESS committee meetings such as the standing written orders, training committee and the ESO working groups; Coordinates State EMS licensure and national registry certification (if applicable) for all Meridian Fire Department (MFD) employees; Facilitates monthly and quarterly EMS department training with ACCESS partners; Facilitates ACLS/PALS programs and certification; Provides EMS orientation for new recruits; Provides new recruits appropriate resources to transition their EMS licensure to the State of Idaho (if applicable); Assist and schedules phase four paramedic testing with the ACCESS medical directors;
Assists as MFD liaison to regional EMS agencies hospitals and heathcare agencies; Reports to the Division Chief of EMS on work progress, including present and potential work problems; also suggests new or improved ways of addressing problems; Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new development in assigned work areas; Works with ACCESS quality assurance (QA) personnel to help ensure EMS reports are accurate and timely; Coordinates specific Department programs or projects, also known as Areas of Responsibility (AOR) as assigned by the Division Chief of EMS; Works directly with the Division Chief of EMS to plan, develop, and direct implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the EMS Division; Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with assigned shift personnel; Maintains an effective and respectful work environment; Coordinates the maintenance and acquisition of new AEDs for the City of Meridian’s AED program; Coordinates with the Fire Department’s training division on integration of fire and EMS training; Coordinates EMS logistics, maintenance, and supply; Completes all necessary reports, correspondence, and documentation as required in the performance of assigned duties; Maintains a sufficient level of fitness to perform job functions; Other duties as assigned.
Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a fire department or EMS agency; Two years as a shift leader, field training officer (FTO), or equivalent (preferred); College graduate from an accredited college or university with an Associates Degree (AA or AS) in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Services, or other related field (preferred); Ability to deliver narcotics and other medications to the various Fire Stations as needed from a centralized location.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
A general knowledge of current records management systems as well as electronic patient care reporting software. General knowledge of local and state polices and current dispatch practices as it pertains to the field of EMS; Current awareness of emergency and non-emergency communications systems, including all related equipment; Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other departments and city employees, disaster victims, other response agencies and the public; Knowledge of Fire/EMS emergency scene operations to include strategy and tactics and overall hazard mitigation; Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations, which may include making and effective oral presentation. Displays an attitude of cooperation and the ability to work well with others; Must have proven skills in organizational/time management, decision making, and problem solving; Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects; Must have the ability to be adaptable/flexible, have a positive attitude, proactively engage with customers, employees and co-workers, and identify enhancement opportunities; Ability to collaborate and to effectively communicate and engage with others, ability to effectively resolve conflict, effectively deal with both internal and external customers, and work effectively within a team environment; Ability to use standard office and classroom equipment including a computer in the course of the work; Ability to use audio-visual equipment used in a classroom setting.
Licensing and Certification:
Valid Idaho Class D Drivers License; Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor (ACLS) or equivalent (Obtained within 6 months of hire); Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor or equivalent (Obtained within 6 months or hire); American Heart Association BLS Instructor or equivalent.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Ability to develop and deliver classes/lessons on EMS-related topics; Duties of this position include occasionally lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Also occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs; Use tools and equipment that pertains to EMS and rescue situations; The noise level is occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, touch and feel; Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception; Employee will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and grasp. Position requires hand/finger dexterity; The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions and extreme temperatures; Employee will drive a department vehicle as part of this position.
Travel Requirements: Local travel is regularly required; Some regional or national travel may be required for training or meetings; Drives to meetings and incident sites during on duty hours.
